All About Flies

Flies are usually tied in the sizes, colors and patterns that best match the prey fish are attracted to. These could be insects, baitfish, crustaceans or any other food a fish may consume during its life cycle, and are typically called “imitator” patterns. Occasionally, patterns are tied to attract fish with sound, color, or motion while not really mimicking a true prey species, and these flies may be called “attractor” patterns. There is a vast array of fly tying materials available today, ranging from the previously popular natural fibers, such as hair and feathers, to the growing trend toward synthetics. The availability of these materials has allowed the fly tyer to create and modify thousands of patterns to suit any situation. The options are only limited by the creativity of the tyer.

About Fly Tying Clinics

Fly tying clinics are held at Tampa Bay On The Fly every Tuesday night. Check the calendar for the theme of the class.  We will be offering family nights, and some classes specifically dedicated to flys that are hot this season.
